Ingredients

  • Tuna steaks (Ahi or Yellowfin, at least 1 inch thick)
  • Olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • Optional Seasoning Variations (choose one set):
  • Asian Flavor: Soy sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds
  • Mediterranean Twist: Lemon zest, oregano, thyme
  • Spicy Kick: Cayenne pepper, paprika, chili flakes
  • Optional Marinade: Soy sauce, lemon juice, olive oil (for 10-15 minutes)
  • For Serving/Garnish: Fresh lemon wedges, fresh parsley, soy sauce

Method

  1. If using frozen tuna steaks, thaw them completely in the refrigerator. Pat them thoroughly dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  2. Brush both sides of the tuna steak with olive oil to help seasonings adhere.
  3. Season both sides of the tuna steak with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. For optional flavor variations, apply chosen seasonings (e.g., soy sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds for Asian; lemon zest, oregano, thyme for Mediterranean; cayenne pepper, paprika, chili flakes for spicy).
  4. If marinating, soak the tuna in soy sauce, lemon juice, and olive oil for 10-15 minutes (do not marinate for too long, as acidic ingredients can affect texture).
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (193°C) for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Arrange the seasoned tuna steaks in the air fryer basket, ensuring there is space between each steak for proper air circulation. If using sesame seeds, press them onto the surface to form a crust.
  7. Air fry the tuna steaks for 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare doneness (target internal temperature: 125-130°F). Adjust cooking time for desired doneness: Rare (2-3 min per side, 115-120°F), Medium (4-5 min per side, 135-140°F).
  8. Remove the tuna steaks from the air fryer and let them rest for 2-3 minutes to allow juices to redistribute.
  9. Serve immediately, garnished with fresh lemon wedges, parsley, or a drizzle of soy sauce.

Notes

Do not overcook tuna; it is best served rare to medium-rare to avoid dryness.
Use a meat thermometer to accurately achieve your desired internal temperature.
Patting tuna dry before seasoning ensures proper searing and seasoning adherence.
Tuna steak is highly versatile; feel free to experiment with different seasonings or marinades.
Leftover tuna can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated gently in the air fryer at 350°F for 2-3 minutes, or enjoyed cold in salads or wraps.
